Candidates who wish to be trained as toxicologists are advised to first find an NVT recognised Supervisor. The NVT Supervisor bears final responsibility for the training and, in consultation with the candidate, draws up a proposal for a personal training plan and a training committee. The training plan consists of a theoretical component (see below) and a practical component, which consists of acquiring expertise in toxicological research or in applied toxicology. Both components must be tailored to the requirements set by the CT for the Toxicologist Training Programme. The NVT Trainer submits the training plan to the Registration Committee Toxicology (RT) for approval. After approval, the candidate is registered by the RT as a ‘Toxicologist in Training’.

For the theoretical component of the training, the modular programme of the Postgraduate Education in Toxicology (PET) offers a complete course package, consisting of compulsory and optional components. Because the various PET courses are offered at intervals of one or more years, careful planning of the personal training programme is necessary.

The requirements for registration as a toxicologist can be found in the information on registration and re-registration
