The Belgian Society for Toxicology and Ecotoxicology (BelTox) and the Belgian Environmental Mutagenicity Society (BEMS) are pleased to announce their 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting (AM26) in Brussels.

This year's theme focuses on the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in toxicology, ecotoxicology, and health/environmental risk assessment.

Programme

The programme is filled with an outstanding line-up of keynote speakers and providing a broad overview of applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of toxicology. We will start the day with an introduction and overview of AI tools in (eco)toxicology focussing on chemical risk assessment (David Rouquie, Bayer), drug development (Helga Gerets, UCB Pharma) and preclinical toxiclogical assessment (Jian Jiang, VUB). We will learn from European initiatives use, explore and refine AI tools in toxicological assessment such as the VICT3R project (Thomas Steger-Hartmann (Bayer AG), which aims to drastically reduce animal testing through the use of "Virtual Control Groups" , the BIGPICTURE IMI project (Pierre Moulin, Deciphex Ltd), the ONTOX project (Marc Theunis, Utrecht University) and AI4AOP (Lidwina Gerner, SCAHT). We will end the day with a discussion on regulatory and ethical implications of AI in toxicology (Flora Musuamba Tshinanu, FAMHP).

Young Scientist Competition for PhD Students

The Annual Meeting includes a dedicated Oral Presentation and Poster Session that will specifically focus on the research of early career scientists in diverse fields of toxicology and ecotoxicology. Please note that topics should not necessarily be linked to the general theme of the meeting, ALL submissions from the broader field of toxicology and ecotoxicology are more than welcome!

If you would like to participate and compete for the best Oral Presentation and/or best Poster, please submit an abstract for a poster and/or oral presentation by October 30st, 2026 via the link provided below. A jury of BelTox-BEMS scientists will select abstracts for four platform presentations (10' plus 5' of questions), and the other abstracts will be retained for poster presentations.

On the day of the Annual Meeting, the oral presentations and posters will be evaluated by a jury composed of members of the BelTox-BEMS Steering Committees and invited speakers. The best two Oral Presentations and the best two Posters will receive a prize (EUR 200 for the best, and EUR100 for the second-best presentation/poster).

Poster Session open to all Participants

If you are not an early career scientist or PhD student, you can also submit an abstract to present your work during the Poster Session at the Annual Meeting. Topics should not necessarily be linked to the general theme of the meeting; you can submit any abstract linked to the field of toxicology or ecotoxicology. The submission process is the same as for the YSC (see link below).

Guidelines for writing the abstract

- The body of the abstract should not exceed 2,500 characters (including spaces)
-  Keep the title to a maximum of 200 characters (including spaces)
- Keep abbreviations and acronyms to a minimum and fully define at first reference
- Do not include citations, tables or figures

NOTE: By submitting your abstract, you grant permission to BelTox-BEMS to publish it in the book of abstracts that will be made available to all participants. The slides of the four selected oral presentations will also be published on the BelTox website for the BelTox members only.

To strengthen our Axiomer Unit, we are looking for a Director Toxicology (full-time) to support our Translational Development portfolio.

Location: Leiden, NL (on-site).

The role:

ProQR is looking for an experienced Director Toxicology to join the Translational Development team and to provide scientific and strategic leadership for the nonclinical safety assessment of our pipeline. In this role, you will define and execute toxicology strategies that enable the progression of innovative RNA therapeutics from discovery through clinical development.

As Director Toxicology, you will work across multidisciplinary project teams and collaborate closely with external partners to ensure robust, science-driven safety packages that support regulatory submissions worldwide. You will play a key role in shaping development strategies while ensuring studies are delivered to the highest scientific, regulatory, and quality standards.

The activities include:

• Lead the nonclinical toxicology strategy across multiple research and development programs, ensuring alignment with program objectives and timelines as well as regulatory expectations.
• Provide scientific leadership for the design, execution, oversight, and interpretation of nonclinical safety studies, including GLP toxicology studies conducted at contract research organizations (CROs).
• Develop integrated nonclinical safety packages that support candidate selection, IND/CTA-enabling activities, and clinical development.
• Serve as the toxicology expert on cross-functional project teams, contributing to development strategy, risk assessment, and decision-making.
• Oversee external CROs, including study planning, protocol review, monitoring of study progress, budget management, and timeline adherence.
• Critically review study protocols, reports, and datasets, ensuring high-quality interpretation and integration of pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacokinetic, and biomarker data.
• Contribute to the preparation of regulatory documents, including Investigator's Brochures, CTA/IND submissions, briefing packages, and responses to health authority questions.
• Stay current with evolving regulatory guidance and scientific advances in toxicology and RNA therapeutics, translating new insights into development strategies.
• Build strong collaborations across Research, Translational Development, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, CMC, and external scientific experts.
• Mentor and guide junior scientists, providing scientific expertise, technical coaching, and support for their professional development within a collaborative research environment.

Required qualifications:

• PhD (or equivalent) in Toxicology, Pharmacology, Veterinary Medicine, or a related life sciences discipline.
• Extensive pharma and/or biotech experience in nonclinical drug development, including leadership of toxicology programs supporting clinical development.
• Deep expertise in the design, conduct, interpretation, and regulatory application of GLP toxicology studies and broader nonclinical safety assessment.
• Strong understanding of ICH guidelines and global regulatory expectations for nonclinical safety packages.
• Experience contributing to or leading regulatory submissions (INDs, CTAs, IBs, briefing documents, responses to health authorities).
• Experience working with oligonucleotide therapeutics, RNA-based medicines, gene therapies, or other advanced therapeutic modalities is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams and provide strategic scientific guidance in a collaborative environment.
• Excellent project management skills, with experience managing external CROs, budgets, and timelines.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific data into clear development recommendations.
• A proactive, pragmatic, and solution-oriented mindset, with a passion for advancing innovative therapies for patients.

We bieden op dit moment een unieke positie als senior wetenschappelijk medewerker toxicologie bij de afdeling Chemische Voedselveiligheid bij het RIVM.

Doel van de functie
Voedselveiligheid is een zeer dynamisch vakgebied. We hebben bijvoorbeeld te maken met blootstelling en risico’s van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen op voedsel of in de voedselproductie. Daarnaast veel aandacht voor gelijktijdige blootstelling aan meerdere stoffen en/of gelijktijdige blootstelling via verschillende routes en verhoogde aandacht voor (milieu-)contaminanten zoals PFAS en zware metalen. We spelen internationaal een rol bij het ontwikkelen en implementeren van nieuwe technieken en gegevens in de risicobeoordeling. Onze ambitie is voorop te blijven lopen in deze ontwikkelingen. Daarvoor is uitbreiding van de afdeling nodig en versterking van verschillende expertises en competenties.

Afdeling Chemische Voedselveiligheid (CVV)
De afdeling Chemische Voedselveiligheid van het RIVM richt zich op het internationale speelveld van risicobeoordeling van chemische stoffen in voedsel, diervoeder en drinkwater. We vormen een samenhangende en collegiale afdeling van ongeveer dertig mensen. Ons dagelijks werk loopt uiteen van het uitvoeren van risicobeoordelingen van stoffen in voedsel, ontwikkeling van methoden hiervoor zoals blootstellings- en dosis-responsmodellering, deelname aan internationale expertgroepen, tot inzet in grote EU projecten.
Wij zijn op zoek naar een nieuwe collega met hart voor het publiek en volksgezondheid belang en de voedselveiligheid in het bijzonder.

Werkzaamheden en taken
Als senior wetenschappelijk medewerker toxicologie bij de afdeling CVV ben je betrokken bij en geef je leiding aan meerdere projecten in opdracht van de ministeries van VWS of LVVN of de NVWA, of werk je in internationale projecten. Je werkt zelfstandig en in teamverband. Je voert risicobeoordelingen uit van chemische stoffen in voedsel, diervoeder en contactmaterialen van drinkwater, binnen het RIVM of in internationale expert-comités. Hierbij voorzie je de ministeries van helder beleidsadvies en/of handeling perspectief. Ook draag je bij aan de methodeontwikkeling voor de risicobeoordeling van chemische stoffen. Dat gaat daarbij onder meer om nieuwe methodes voor mengselrisicobeoordeling, in samenwerking met andere partijen binnen en buiten het RIVM.
Afhankelijk van je ervaring kun je een leidende rol spelen bij het werven en aansturen van internationale projecten. Je werkt dan samen met bijvoorbeeld de EFSA, de Europese Commissie en zusterinstituten uit andere landen.

Op donderdag 26 maart a.s. organiseert de Sectie Arbeidstoxicologie in samenwerking met de Contactgroep Gezondheid & Chemie het middagsymposium ‘De toekomst van biomonitoring op de werkplek: een onmisbare stap vooruit?’

Biomonitoring biedt vele mogelijkheden. Tegelijkertijd roept het fundamentele vragen op over de praktische toepasbaarheid, betrouwbaarheid, effectiviteit, privacy, ethiek en de gevolgen voor beleid en praktijk. De ontwikkelingen rond biomonitoring op de werkplek gaan snel. Het advies van de Gezondheidsraad en van de Europese onderzoeksprogramma’s HBM4EU en PARC, laat zien hoe biomonitoring een centrale rol kan gaan spelen in de vroeg-signalering en preventie van beroepsziekten.
